Why this clause is risky
A non-compete says you cannot do similar work for a while after the project ends. The abusive version is wildly out of proportion: a year-long, industry-wide ban attached to a six-week gig.
Always check four things: how long it lasts, how wide the geography is, exactly what work is banned, and whether it names competitors or just says any competing work. Often you can trade it for a non-solicitation clause (you will not poach their clients), which protects them without sidelining you.

Subject: Quick ask on the non-compete
Hi [Client name], The non-compete as written ([X months], [scope]) is wider than this project justifies. It would block me from [type of work] for [X months] over a [project length] engagement. Two options that protect you without sidelining me: narrow it to non-solicitation (I will not poach your clients), or cut it to [shorter period] limited to [narrow scope]. Either works for me. Thanks, [Your name]
